Pyrography is defined as "The process or art of producing designs on wood, leather, or other materials by using heated tools or a fine flame." Pyrography is also known as pokerwork or, more commonly, woodburning.

Early civilizations experimented with designs using fire. Some excellent examples can be found at the E-Museum of Pyrographic Art.

Although sometimes associated with hobbyists using soldering iron type tools, woodburning has evolved to beome a fine art. Artists of all statures produce some of the most interesting and perceptive art work in the world. Take a look at some of the fine artists listed in our Directory.

If you are interested in learning more about woodburning or scrollsawing you can find many excellent tutorials at various sites on the Internet. We won't attempt to duplicate what many of these fine artists have already put in place to help you. Our directory lists resources to help you find the resources that you need. Locate woodcarving clubs in your area and become involved. You'll find crafters at all skill levels who love to share their passion with you. I am a member of the Valley Woodcarvers Club in Hudson, Wisconsin.
